Apple not “playing fair” with iphone?

Tripped across this article in the New York Times today “Want an iPhone? Beware the iHandcuffs”, and I had to read more * who would not with the term ‘handcuffs’ coupled with the name iPhone?*I have never heard of the term “crippleware” before, this article does a nice job of explaining it. I have been wanting to get an iPod for some time now, my son has one and it looks pretty neat. But I did not know that one can only down load or use music from iTunes on it, so right there I feel I am limited in my choices.

My favorite place to down load music is But if I want to use this wonderful source of free MP3s ( and some great new musicians of all genres) I cant use it on an iPod 😦 So, I will continue to search for a nifty looking iPodish Mp3 player, one that will allow me to decide what service I want to use.

I have to admit, I have tried iTunes before, I find it neat to look at, but clumsy for searching on my PC. Maybe I was not cut out to be an Apple person. I admit that at first when I saw the iPhone the other day, I was attracted by the pretty buttons and skins, now I know I just like shiny objects.

That doesn’t sound right to me. I have a regular iPod and it works with all of my MP3s, including songs that did not come from the iTunes store. I can’t see the iPhone being any different.

Just finished reading the article you mentioned. It’s true that any songs purchased on the iTunes website will only work on iTunes devices due to the copyprotection scheme. That’s one of the reasons I don’t buy songs from iTunes. Still… the iPhone wil work fine with your existing MP3 collection.
