Tripped across this article in the New York Times today “Want an iPhone? Beware the iHandcuffs”, and I had to read more * who would not with the term ‘handcuffs’ coupled with the name iPhone?*I have never heard of the term “crippleware” before, this article does a nice job of explaining it. I have been wanting to get an iPod for some time now, my son has one and it looks pretty neat. But I did not know that one can only down load or use music from iTunes on it, so right there I feel I am limited in my choices.
My favorite place to down load music is download.com. But if I want to use this wonderful source of free MP3s ( and some great new musicians of all genres) I cant use it on an iPod 😦 So, I will continue to search for a nifty looking iPodish Mp3 player, one that will allow me to decide what service I want to use.
I have to admit, I have tried iTunes before, I find it neat to look at, but clumsy for searching on my PC. Maybe I was not cut out to be an Apple person. I admit that at first when I saw the iPhone the other day, I was attracted by the pretty buttons and skins, now I know I just like shiny objects.
